Big life events occur to our friends or family members and we don’t quite know what to say — so we often say nothing at all. Living in an empty nest is a time in our lives when we could use some encouraging words from family and friends but they don’t always know what to say, though they want to say something. Ninety percent of consumers polled by Hallmark said they wanted more choices in encouragement cards that would allow them to share support in unique ways for real life situations. In response, Hallmark recently introduced “Journeys,” a collection of 176 greeting cards that cover everything from sharing grief to celebrating the joy of recovery. Some address specific events, such as empty nest and parent-to-parent support, while others are more general in nature, for celebrating a personal victory or saying a simple “thank you.” To make sure the sentiment of each card was true to life, the Journeys writers conducted research, attended focus groups and talked with people who had experienced certain situations. Hallmark Journeys writer John Peterson wrote the card for “empty-nesters” who have sent their last child into the world. “I felt ‘empty nest’ sounded like a sad term, so I wanted to say that sending off the last little bird can be an opportunity for positive things, too, like personal growth and adventure,” he explained. “We’re so afraid of saying the wrong things during difficult times that we often don’t say anything. Even though people today are more open to talking about subjects like cancer, divorce, addiction, and miscarriage, most of us still find it very difficult to find the right words.” Journeys cards are now available at Hallmark Gold Crown Stores nationwide.
